Insomnia Causes and Symptoms

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder characterized by:  

1. Difficulty falling asleep (initial insomnia) 

2. Difficulty staying asleep (middle insomnia) 

3. Waking up too early and being unable to fall back asleep (terminal insomnia) 

4. Poor quality of sleep 

5. Daytime fatigue, mood disturbances, and difficulty concentrating 

 Insomnia can be:  

1. Acute (short-term): Lasting from a few days to a few weeks 

2. Chronic (long-term): Lasting more than 3 months  

Causes of insomnia include: 

 1. Stress and anxiety 

2. Irregular sleep schedule 

3. Poor sleep habits 

4. Physical discomfort or pain 

5. Certain medications 

6. Caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol consumption 

7. Electronic screen time before bed 

8. Underlying medical conditions  

Symptoms of insomnia may also include: 

 1. Restlessness and irritability 

2. Difficulty concentrating and memory lapses 

3. Mood swings and depression 

4. Increased risk of accidents and errors
